A confidence trick or confidence game (also known as a bunko, con, flim flam, gaffle, grift, hustle, scam, scheme, swindle or bamboozle) is an attempt to defraud a person or group by gaining their confidence. The victim is known as the mark, the trickster is called a confidence man, con man, confidence trickster, or con artist, and any accomplices are known as shills. Confidence men or women exploit human characteristics such as greed and dishonesty, and have victimized individuals from all walks of life. HistoryThe first known usage of the term "confidence man" in English was in 1849; it was used by American press during the United States trial of William Thompson. Thompson chatted with strangers until he asked if they had the confidence to lend him their watches, whereupon he would walk off with the watch; he was captured when a victim recognized him on the street. From Google News Search: "Scams" How can my child get acting auditions without any scams? Q. My child is 11-years old. Currently he's a background "extra". Recently, we've been looking for auditions in North NJ/NYC. Unfortunately, everything we found so far was a scam. Plus, our community theaters don't have any roles for children. Are there any sites that have free audition submissions---that aren't scams? My son does very well in school (All A's), is always calm, and is not spoiled. He doesn't seek "fame" like the other "dream kiddies" do. He just wants to act. Asked by AAAAAAA! - Sun Mar 28 16:00:31 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm an LA Actor giving you the real deal! Q. I see a lot of information on the issue. I know some are legitamate and helful to people. But I hear a lot ( in Consumer Reports and shows like Suzie Orman ) about how many of them are scams and cause more problems Is there a way to find out? And how do the ones that are scams, screwing people over? Asked by googirl77 - Wed Dec 23 14:05:32 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Most of these firms are not outright scams...but they do engage in a tactic that requires you to deliberately default on your credit cards and this can be dangerous. Stay away from any "debt consolidation" company that promises to cut your debt and payments in half through debt settlement...This is a risky tactic of deliberately ceasing all payments to creditors and forcing your accounts into default to attempt settlements. You pay a monthly fee to a debt consolidator...this entire fee goes towards building a settlement account and to the consolidator's fees to settle your accounts in the future. Your credit card companies will deliberately not be paid so that all the accounts will default/charge-off so that they can attempt… [cont.] Answered by CatDad - Wed Dec 23 14:16:49 2009 Why are there so many online home business scams advertised on job career search web sites?
Q. I have noticed that more than 50% of the jobs listed on career job search websites are online business scams. Why do these companies like hotjobs, monster, yahoo, etc. allow this? This just interferes with the already difficult process of finding a job for most Americans. Asked by JoeG - Thu Jul 8 15:50:43 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. It is very tricky for job seekers like you mentioned. It sucks and is time consuming to have to weed through all the scams or junk. There are two reasons why work at home business scams are always found on even the most popular job sites. First, lots of people fall for these scams so frauds do make money from these ads (as sad as it is to hear). Then, job search sites get hundreds even thousands of job listings submitted each day and that is A LOT of listings to weed through. They don't have the time to do this; therefore, those scam ads usually stay online. Answered by Jennifer - Fri Jul 9 13:48:51 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Scams" |
