Cold calling is the process of approaching prospective customers or clients, typically via telephone The telephone is a telecommunications device that transmits and receives sound, most commonly the human voice. The country is situated mostly in central North America, where its forty-eight contiguous states and Washington, D.C., the capital district, lie between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the states have enacted "Do Not Call Lists" allowing people to add their telephone number to a list that telemarketers are not permitted to contact. It is similar to the US Do Not Call List The National Do Not Call Registry is intended to give U.S. consumers an opportunity to limit the telemarketing calls they receive. To register by telephone , consumers may call 1-888-382-1222. The registry was set to begin in 2003, but a court challenge delayed its implementation until 2004. The law provides exceptions to a blanket do-not-call which is managed and enforced by the FTC.
Within the European Union The European Union is a political and economic union of 27 member states, located primarily in Europe. Committed to regional integration, the EU was established by the Treaty of Maastricht on 1 November 1993 upon the foundations of the pre-existing European Economic Community. With almost 500 million citizens, the EU combined generates an, the Data Privacy Directive 2002/58/EC forces the governments of its member states to issue laws until June 2007 that prohibit general cold calling. However, the directive allows both an opt-in or an opt-out model, i.e. requiring a national register for phone numbers which either do (opt-in) or do not (opt-out) welcome cold calls.
